Universal Design Living Laboratory Awarded the Prestigious LEED Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council

September 25, 2015 – Columbus, OH -- The Universal Design Living Laboratory, http://udll.com the national demonstration home and garden in Columbus, Ohio, received the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for the environmental merits of this home.

The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. LEED for Homes http://www.usgbc.org/homes/ is a voluntary, third-party certification program developed by residential experts and experienced builders.  A home can achieve LEED certification under the LEED for Homes program after undergoing a technically rigorous process, including the incorporation of green strategies to achieve efficiency and healthy indoor environments. The sound design and operation of the home is tested and measured using tools like a home energy (HERS) rating and onsite inspections.

"We're delighted we chose to have our home certified by the LEED for Homes program.  Knowing that our home has been thoroughly inspected, reviewed and approved by an impartial third party team affords us peace of mind knowing that we did things right.  We feel validated in our efforts to build our home responsibly and operate it economically," said Mark Leder, homeowner and general contractor. Leder and his wife Rosemarie Rossetti, Ph.D. built their home with an eye for environmental sustainability, accessibility, and energy efficiency.

LEED is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. More than 196,500 residential units are currently participating in LEED, with more than 82,000 projects having received LEED for Homes certification. There are only a handful of LEED certified homes in central Ohio.

The LEED for Homes provider was GreenHome Institute with the verification performed by Green Building Consulting.

Rosemarie Rossetti, Ph.D. invites people to attend her free webinar on October 14, 2015 from noon to 1:00 PM (Eastern). The program is focused on the universal design features of this home. To learn more and register go to: http://udll.com/go/to.cfm?l=ghi01

The Universal Design Living Laboratory achieved LEED for Homes certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in the following areas:

  • Sustainable Sites, such as building on an infill lot, and reusing ALL the soil that was excavated from the project.
  • Water Efficiency, including very high efficiency EPA WaterSense plumbing fixtures, tankless water heaters, a rainwater harvesting system, and a landscape that requires no irrigation.
  • Energy & Atmosphere, that minimizes heating and cooling loads, by meticulous air sealing, and rightsizing HVAC equipment.
  • Materials & Resources, incorporating pre-fab structural insulated wall panels, a recycled aluminum shingle roof, and a comprehensive materials recycling program.
  • Indoor Environmental Quality, utilizing low- or no- outgassing or Volatile Organic Compound finishes, hospital grade air filtration and humidity control, and regulated air exchanges with outside fresh air.
  • Innovation in Design, featuring a passive solar design with six foot roof overhangs to control and take advantage of solar gain through the windows.  In addition, the project has a fully wheelchair accessible interior and exterior, joining the select few single family homes worldwide that incorporated universal design, making the home not only environmentally sustainable, but socially sustainable as well.

The first floor of this home measures 3,597 square feet. The total conditioned space including the lower level is 7,194 square feet.

Over 200 companies contributed products and services for the construction.

The Universal Design Living Laboratory is the top rated universal design home in North America earning three national certifications: Livable Design (platinum rating), ZeroStep (gold rating) and Life-Flex Home (platinum rating).

This home also received a gold rating on the ICC 700 National Green Building Standard through the Home Innovation Research Labs subsidiary of the National Association of Home Builders.
